My Hand is a Red Brick: Marrying Story to Image
thursday, 15h

Are you a writer and a wannabe filmmaker?  Or are you looking to beef up your film’s thematic oompf? My Hand is a Red Brick is a workshop designed to help writers and filmmakers find the best image systems for their story.  How do you turn your poem, rant, childhood memory, short-short story, diary entry, or napkin scribble into a powerhouse film?  How do improve your film idea to get the best bang for your visual buck?  Based on his experience making short films, writer Michael V. Smith walks you through some simple steps to understanding how to begin, or strengthen, a short film.  The workshop involves brainstorming, some simple film analysis, easy exercises, and rubbing in a little DIY gumption.

In English language.
no registration necessary. If you have questions, please contact Michael: mvs[at]telus.net

Queer Media Activism
Sa, 15h

What is ‘Queer Media’ and what is ‘Media Activism’? In many queer political scenes there are sometimes limited ways in which people feel they can express political activism, when in fact there are many different mediums that can be used, and ways of approaching politics and being an activist. A part of why queer media is important is because there are so many ways in which we do not see ourselves reflected in the media around us; the fact of making our own media, creating new and empowered images/reflections of ourselves, and having control over how we are shown in media, are forms of activism and self-empowerment. This workshop looks at the wide range of possibilities in which people can be expressive and engage in meaningful queer media as a form of activism. People will leave with some hands-on ideas on how they can be making their own media.
